An ironic experience sparked my inspiration for this one: I saw many people stopped and stared at something on the ground in front of a Chinese traditional medicine shop. After brief moments after figuring out what they were looking at, they all left with dismay. It turned out that people mistook iron nails on the ground as caterpillar fungus, an extremely expensive herbal medicine. For those people, the conflicted emotion of the surprising pleasure that they discovered “treasure” out of not where is coupled with the deep disappointment of understanding the truth. For most people, the value of iron nails is not comparable to the expensive medicine. However, is iron nails’ inferiority absolute? In terms of construction, caterpillar fungus loses its value, but iron nails become the irreplaceable treasure. I wish to use this work to explore the definition of treasure. In my opinion, all things can be treasures given appropriate contexts. |
