The first time enjoying Verdi and Puccini’s opera allowed me to catch the old theater bug. Gradually, I become interested in exploring the incompatibility between male and female characters in theater. Specifically, despite their background or characteristics, many female protagonists in theater possess a beautiful and free spiritual world, like the butterfly. On contrary, many male characters often possess too much desire for power and fame, as well as the ability to move people. These male roles are often portrayed to devour female roles like lizards praying on butterflies. Most interestingly, these female characters often choose to stay around these men for emotional or material needs regardless of the aforementioned dynamic. Such innate conflict sometimes angers me. I choose to utilize the fire-treated paper to represent the burning hot tension between these characters, as well as their cindering future. I believe in respect, inclusivity, and equality between modern genders, but such a theme of incompatibility will inarguably persist. This work simultaneously suggests that personalities as beautiful as butterflies should avoid characters like lizards and choose their own future. |
