The construction site has been one of my primary sources of inspiration. My childhood witness of father’s architectural projects, especially of the miracle that is the concrete greatness of city skylights transformed from wilderness through the hands of talented architects and hard workers. This theme has been the enlightenment of my career as an artist. Rain shoes/galoshes are the most commonly protected yet the most ignored objects among construction workers. The existence of this stark contrast evokes an emotional response within its audience, where the final destination of these rain shoes within the dirty corner filled with garbage is comparable to the potential futures of these hard-working construction workers. Therefore, I made this piece by molding the rain shoes with cement so that they stand erect, in order to honor these hard-working people. Beyond demonstrating my appreciation towards this group of specific people, I also wish to explore the philosophical relationship between humans and objects. Specifically, is there a meaning of the existence of these objects beyond servicing people? How are our emotions towards these inanimate objects comparable to our emotions toward humans? |
