Art must first come from the heart but then be developed through creativity. Creativity is at once what makes us human and also allows us to understand what it is to be human. Harrow Beijing aspires to bring out the creativity in all our students so that they can not only be successful in the professional lives but also contribute to society by allowing us to reflect on who we are and how we see and treat others.

　　Recently， Cici S， a Year 13 student at Harrow Beijing， held an art exhibition with the theme of ‘Dream of Dreams’ in Beijing Cuigezhuang International Art Zone. Mrs. Rachel Dent， the Head of Harrow Beijing， was present and discussed art with Cici and listened  to our student‘s unique ideas.

　　近期，我校13年级学生Cici S在北京崔各庄国际艺术金融示范区举办了以“Dream of Dreams”为主题的艺术展。哈罗北京校长Rachel Dent女士亲临现场，与Cici展开了一场对话，一起探讨艺术的意义。

　　Dreams

　　未来就像一张空白的画布，在那里梦想有机会自由地表达自己。膨胀的泡沫代表着雄心勃勃的梦想，五彩缤纷亦很容易破碎。当秋千摆动向高处，朝向梦想的更近一步伴随着来自重力和风的阻力，通往成功的道路是充满挑战的。能决定泡沫存灭的只有一个人的努力技能和非凡的才能。

　　The future is compared to a blank canvas， where dreams have the opportunity to freely express themselves. Expanding foam here represents ambitious dreams： both iridescently colorful and easily breakable. When the wing swings high， the closeness towards the dreams is coupled with greater resistance from both gravity and wind suggesting challenging difficulties on the very verge of success. Whether or not the dreams survive or perish is only determined by a combination of one’s hard earned skill and innate talent.

　　A Meeting with Art

　　与艺术结缘

　　‘When I first saw an art exhibition in Year 9， I was deeply enthralled by the clever compositions， contrasting colors， and thought-provoking themes. I started learning painting in my spare time， from foundational techniques in sketching to experimenting with oil paint and feeling the colors dance on the canvas，’ Cici recalled.

　　“当我在九年级第一次看到一个艺术展时，我就被作品的巧妙构图、对比色和发人深省的主题深深吸引住了。从那时起，我开始在业余时间学习绘画，从基本的素描到油画，感受色彩在画布上的跳跃。”Cici回忆道。

　　To Cici， art is another perspective from which she observes society. She uses a camera to record every novel material that she discovers. The process of recording each material and its properties also gives her a keen eye for interpersonal issues， especially relationships， and the desire to reflect them in art in order to raise awareness.

　　对Cici来说，艺术是从另一个视角观察社会。她会用相机记录发现的每一种新奇的材料及其特性。这个发现和记录的过程，也让她对社会问题，尤其是人际关系问题更加敏锐，从而通过艺术手法表现出来，呼吁公众的关注。

　　Expression through Art

　　The art exhibition is a process of thinking and sharing. In Cici‘s solo exhibition， she put her exploration of new materials to artistic use and expressed her contemplation of our relationships with family， friends， society， nature and objects.

　　艺术展是一个思考与分享的过程。在Cici的个展中，她将对新材料的探索巧妙地用于艺术创作中，分享了对父母、朋友、社会、自然和物体之间关系的思考。

　　Line Busy 忙音

　　交织在一起的电话线代表了我们错综复杂的人际关系。电话线的紧密纠缠是亲密关系的标志，也是无法摆脱道德困境的标志。没有这样的纠缠，一个人获得了自由，但同时失去了来自他人的潜在帮助。

　　The intertwined telephone lines represent our intricate interpersonal relationships. The tight entanglement of the telephone line is a sign of a close relationship， as well as the inability to withdraw oneself from moral dilemmas. Without such entanglement， one gains freedom but simultaneously loses potential help from others.

　　’With this exhibition， I hope to inspire my audience to relook at our world and re-evaluate the confusions of our time. Meanwhile， some of my work is dedicated to sparkingly intense cross-cultural communication and invokes respect towards different ways of thinking，‘ Cici told us.

　　“通过这次展览，我希望能启发观众重新审视我们的世界，并重新评估时代的困惑。我希望我的作品可以引发跨文化交流，并呼吁对不同思维方式的尊重。”Cici告诉我们。

　　Development at Harrow Beijing 收获在哈罗北京

　　’In Year 12， I took A-Level Art which allowed me to experiment with more mediums of expression to explore the deeper meaning behind each piece，‘ said Cici going on to describe her courses at Harrow Beijing. ’For example， looking for inspirations for my collages， I looked into art movements such as Dadaism. This led me to further contemplate how this art movement both originated and shaped its era.‘

　　“在12年级的时候，我选择了A-level美术课程，这让我可以尝试更多的表现方式，去探索每件作品背后更深层次的意义。” Cici谈到她的课程时说道，“例如为了寻找拼贴画的灵感，我深入研究了达达主义等艺术运动。这让我进一步思考这个艺术运动是如何起源和塑造那个时代的。”

　　Cici is applying for an Art History and Fine Art major. As she enters university， Cici is ready to dedicate herself to the study of art and art history in order to lay a solid foundation for a future career as a curator.

　　Cici正在申请大学艺术史和美术专业。随着即将进入大学阶段，她已准备好投身于艺术和艺术史的学习，为将来成为优秀策展人打下坚实的基础。

　　Our passion is for teaching and developing young people and our reward is to be found on days like this， in places like this as we see young people flourish.

　　当我们看到哈罗北京的孩子们在各个领域绽放的时候，我们感到很欣慰。这也是对我们坚持不懈地为学生提供卓越的教育最好的动力与回报。

​　　Our job as teachers is to help students find their passions and develop those. We do this by offering， not only a wide and varied curriculum， but an activities programme that exposes children to art， sport， poetry and music to name just a few areas.

　　作为教师，我们的工作是帮助学生找到他们的兴趣所在，并发展他们的兴趣。为此，我们不仅提供了广泛多样的课程，而且还提供了让孩子接触艺术、体育、诗歌和音乐等各领域活动的机会。

　　The Head Mrs. Rachel Dent further noted that education should be broad， it should bring out passion， it should bring out enthusiasm. At Harrow Beijing， we are very much about that idea of breadth and about letting our students find their own talents， their own abilities. The role of the school is then to harness and develop those talents.
